What Happened?
Shares of fabless chip and software maker Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) fell 9.2% in the afternoon session after President Trump announced "reciprocal tariffs" on all US imports, set at a minimum rate of 10%.
From clothing brands and electronics makers to the e-commerce sites that move their goods, companies built on global supply chains took the biggest hit. Stocks with heavy exposure to Asia were especially hard-hit, as the new tariffs threatened the growth and profits of firms with factories in the region. Vietnam, central to many companies' production plans, faced a 46% tariff. Cambodia and Indonesia were also in the crosshairs, with tariff rates of 49% and 32%. These measures could significantly erode the competitiveness of goods produced in those regions. For example, reduced production volumes would negatively affect the sales growth of all companies benefiting from these manufacturing hubs.
The shares closed the day at $154.07, down 10.4% from previous close.

What The Market Is Telling Us
Broadcom’s shares are very volatile and have had 28 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 8 days ago when the stock dropped 5.4% on the news that stocks pulled back (Nasdaq -1.5%, S&P 500 -1.5%) amid fresh concerns about trade tariffs. The pullback followed comments from President Trump clarifying the scope of his administration's 25% tariffs on Venezuela. He noted that it would apply to any country that does business with Venezuela. For example, 25% is on top of the already-in-place 20% tariff on China because China imports oil from Venezuela, which could translate to a 45% tariff on some Chinese goods. This announcement could significantly raise the operating costs for affected companies and institutions.
Broadcom is down 33.5% since the beginning of the year, and at $154.35 per share, it is trading 38.3% below its 52-week high of $250 from December 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Broadcom’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $6,589.
