What Happened?

Shares of retail behemoth Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) jumped 2.7% in the morning session after Deutsche Bank upgraded the company to Buy from Hold and raised its price target to $136 from $113.

Deutsche Bank analyst Krisztina Katai upgraded the stock following meetings with Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey, writing in a note to clients that persistent inflation reinforces the retailer's value proposition and accelerates grocery market-share gains, per CNBC and TipRanks. The updated target represents an increase of $23 and implies approximately 17% upside from the previous session's close. In research covered by CNBC, Katai observed that higher-margin revenue streams, including digital advertising, marketplace merchant services, and memberships, are outgrowing core retail operations.

Paired with supply-chain automation, those segments are set to expand incremental profit margins, while the company reported that customer baskets using its Sparky artificial intelligence shopping assistant are roughly 40% larger than standard orders.

After the initial pop, the shares cooled down to $118.96, up 2.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Walmart’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was about 2 months ago when the stock dropped 9.9% on the news that Walmart U.S. comps decelerated from 4.8% a year earlier to 2.6% — the slowest growth since about 2020 — and missed the ~3.7% forecast many had modeled.

Walmart is up 5.5% since the beginning of the year, but at $118.96 per share, it is still trading 11.4% below its 52-week high of $134.20 from May 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Walmart’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,539.
